Daishi Matsunaga’s intimate documentary portrait follows the acclaimed visual artist and friend Pyuupiru over an 8-year period, charting the physical, psychological and artistic metamorphosis of a character, uncomfortable with the male body with which he was born, whose appearances in outrageous, attention-grabbing costumes blur the line between creator and creation. Pyuupiru 2001-2008 portrays the emotional, psychological, and physical process of Pyuupiru’s gender transformation while also documenting the evolution of his work. Focusing on his conceptualisation of the difficulties of being born as a man, it literally lays bare the artist and his work, culminating with footage from his performance art installation at the 2005 Yokohama Triennale.
Previously screened at Nippon Connection Film Festival 2010, Jeonju International Film Festival 2010 and Paris Cinema Festival 2010.
The Pyuupiru 2001-2008 screening will be followed by a Q&A with the director, Daishi Matsunaga.
